OOBIO 1 would cost 1300 euros in Estonia

The prices of customized registration plates for cars have gone up in Estonia. Nowadays you have to pay 20 000 Estonian crowns (approx. 1300 euros) if you want to get your own name, nickname or symbol on your plates.

In the beginning of the 90's, everybody paid the same amount - 226 crowns (about 15 euros) - no matter if you had your own suggestion or if you just wanted to change your old soviet plates to the new ones. Many future orientated people in those times bought their plates "in advance". It was possible, even if you didn't own a car.

The rules about desired reg plates are based on the Vienna convention. All registration plates must contain numbers next to the letter combination. So you can't illustrate your car only with your name anymore. And you are not allowed to registrate ugly words (F*** 1) or confusing combinations (POLICE 17) either.

However, common sense says, that if you put for example OOBIO 1 on your car plates instead of ABC 123, you should forget about occasional double parking, speeding or looking too long at the driver next to you in front of the traffic lights.
