EC is a section where we let you in on the Finnish expressions

The wolf is a very important animal in Finnish folklore tradition. During old times, it was a dreaded creature who used to be present in everyday life on the countryside. Nowadays you don't see them anymore so often, but they have become imminent in daily life in the form of expressions.

Here are some examples of wolf-expressions:

  • 'Susipari', in English 'wolf couple'. This is a phrase for an unmarried couple living together

  • 'Susiraja', in English 'wolf border'. A wolf border runs between a civilized, urban area and an uncivilized, rural area.

  • 'Sudenkuoppa', in English 'wolf pit'. If somebody digs a wolf pit, it means that he or she has a cunning ploy.

  • 'Sudennalka', in English 'wolf hunger'. Wolf hunger is a condition of starving almost to death.

And if somebody 'turns into a wolf', it means that he or she is a total failure.

Funny how the same words can have such a different meaning in different countries. Just the other day I spoke to someone from Canada who told me that 'To be a Wolf' in the Indian culture means to be a leader.
