Topic: Places in Helsinki
Yesterday, on the evening of the 26th of March, a friend of us gave her goodbye-party, because she is starting next week in her new position.
First everybody gathered at Teatteri, a posh locale downtown. The Editorial Team of Helsinki Times was unfortunately late, and when we arrived, everybody were already bored of that place.
The hostess made a proposal to go and check out another place which sounded like "OOBU". Naturally the Helsinki Times' Team noticed immediately the similarity reminding us of our "mother-page" oobio. Can you imagine: a new pub in downtown Helsinki with such a similar name!
And what a dissapointment, when we reached the place! It was actually called ?bo, the Swedish word for Turku, the ex-capital of Finland. The misunderstanding came from the fact, that ?bo is pronounced as 'oobu'.
The place itself was quite funny - a very strange mixture of the 1930's (the wallpapers), the 1980's (the discoball hanging from the roof and the plastic lamps), a sauna (the benches in the back-room), an old-fashioned jukebox upgraded for cd's, and a surprising Bahama look in the upstairs toilet.
?bo has opened only recently, but already has lots of customers. Before it became ?bo, it used to be a Russian restaurant, which probably explains the funny look of the interior.
If you are looking for strange room design or want to check out new places downtown, try Bar ?bo, Uudenmaankatu 28.
